Teen Read Week
October 12 - 18, 2014

Teen Read Week is a YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) sponsored event. For the past few years, Eight Cousins has supported Teen Read Week through displays and events. In this newsletter we offer reviews and recommendations of books that we think will engage teen readers. Many of our staff members actively read middle grade and Young Adult novels. If you don't see what you're looking for in this newsletter, we hope that you'll stop in and ask us about great books for teens. If you're a fan of YA books, be sure to sign up for our YA newsletter to find out when YA authors are visiting. Also, stop by our Tumblr page -- The Back Wall -- which features reviews books for teens. Finally, if you would like to be part of our Teen Review Team -- in exchange for a review, pick up an ARC (Advance Reader Copy) -- email Sara at events@eightcousins.com.

Books for Teens

You need to read this book. Yes, you. Go find a copy of 100 Sideways Miles, by Andrew Smith, right now and start reading.

This book contains the following:

  • A 16-year-old boy who measures time in miles
  • A totally-awesome-but-sometimes-annoying-and-always-raunchy best friend
  • A first love
  • A famous father
  • Distinctive scars
  • Epilepsy
  • Falling horses
  • Knackeries
  • Heterochromatic eyes
  • Bridge-jumping
  • Embarrassing and Awkward Situations
  • Raunchy teenage boy humor
  • A road trip
  • Unplanned situations
  • Difficult decisions
As if these are not enough reasons for you to read this book, you will also enjoy laugh-out-loud humor, touching and emotional moments, and existential questions. The best thing of all, however, is Andrew Smith's Amazing Ability to get inside the heads of teenage boys and make them accessible to all of us, including this 50-something Mom of 3 boys. ~ Lysbeth

Lies We Tell Ourselves by Robin Talley is a phenomenal story of two high-school seniors experiencing de-segregation for the first time in their Virginia school. Told from alternating perspectives, Sarah and Linda are both intelligent, fierce, and passionate. Their dialogue, debates, and conversations about segregation, racism, and social justice are unapologetic and thought-provoking. The story provides no easy solutions, but instead offers a solid and responsible ending that leaves hope for both girls to find a better future, while clearly acknowledging that there is still much left for us to do. ~ Sara

I just finished reading the new Pittacus Lore: The Revenge of Seven from the I Am Number Four series. The first one is my favorite so far. The series follows a group of young people who have escaped from another planet's doom and are making their way here on Earth. This series would be a terrific recommendation for a reluctant reader because the characters are so compelling. The plot is exciting and at times moves at a feverish pace with a nice blend of action, occasional violence (always justified in the context of the world the book creates), and some teen romance. There are clever and satisfying twists for the reader. ~ Cathy S

Tasha and Lola's Book Corner
In anticipation of Halloween, Lola (18 months) recommends Where's Boo? a hide-and-seek board book by Salina Yoo. At this age, Lola likes the familiar - animals whose names she can say or whose sounds she can make - and because we have two black cats at home, this book immediately caught her eye. Sticking with the black cat theme, Lola also enjoyed the Little Cat finger puppet board book, and the Black Cat clackers board book.
