April 2017: Audio, Digital, and Social

April 2017

Audio

One of the joys of owning Eight Cousins is that my work is reading. But I had no idea how many new books are published each year, and how many of them I would really want to read. Customers looking for book suggestions start with staff recommendations, so in order to connect with our customers, we all try to read as many new titles as possible.

When searching for more time to read, I started using Libro.fm, which offers over 70,000 titles in downloadable audiobook format to your iOS or Android device using Libro's app. Now whenever I'm driving, working around the house, or walking I can listen to a book.

A wide range of books is available -- I just downloaded the newly released Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders and have listened to The Whistler by John Grisham and The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. There are also many children's and young adult titles, which I enjoy listening to while on shorter trips around Falmouth.

I thought I would have trouble following the stories and my mind would wander off, but the narrators bring the books to life and pull me right in.

The only catch to listening to audiobooks is that I often have to stay in the car when I reach my destination because I'm so engrossed in the book!

Audio books are available individually or through membership. If you are searching for books on our site, look for the note "Get the Digital Audiobook," which links directly to the audio book at Libro.fm.

We are excited that Libro.fm also offers audiobook memberships. Your first audiobook is $0.99 and the service costs only $14.99 per month. You'll get to select from 70,000+ audiobooks, including New York Times bestsellers and hidden gems curated by our indie bookseller sisters and brothers all over the country. Best of all, you'll be supporting your own local, independent bookstore.

Digital

We have a website.

Some of our most dedicated customers have looked at me in surprise when I mention it. While we do consider our physical space on Main Street to be our primary store, we also have an active digital store available through our website and social media, including these newsletters.

We run the front end of our website, which includes our events calendar, staff profiles, book lists, New Releases, weekly Bestsellers, job updates. All of these pages are updated regularly, by someone at Eight Cousins.

The back end connects with one of our warehouse partners. This information is important, because it means that the searchable book database is exponentially larger than the books we have in stock.

Our website lists multiple formats of the same book (hardcover, paperback, audio!). You can search by title, author, ISBN, keyword. It indicates if a book is out of print. It also indicates whether we have the book in stock (updated once daily, so PLEASE call first!). Sometimes book entries indicate that a book is hard to locate and may not be available; the good news is that we work with other warehouses. Do call or email if you have questions.

We think our website offers the best of both worlds. You have the convenience of ordering online, while continuing to support your local family bookshop. You also have the convenience of having the books shipped directly to us, eliminating any shipping fees. We'll call you when the book arrives. Add a note to the comments, if you would like the book wrapped or have any special instructions.
