February 2016: Happy Endings

February 2016

Absolutely Truly is a delightful middle grade book. Truly is great protagonist; I particularly appreciate her struggle with her height -- she towers over everyone in her grade. The book is also filled with phenomenal secondary characters. One woman in the town of Pumpkin Falls, NH carries kittens in her coat pockets. Just in case. The local English professor names his children after characters in Shakespeare's plays. No matter how embarrassing that might be. My favorite part of the story, however, is the book store. Perhaps I am biased. Truly's father and her aunt take over the family bookstore when their parents decide to retire and travel. I found myself jotting down notes as Truly and her family renovate and work to make the store a community space in Pumpkin Falls. For Valentine's Day, Truly makes a display of books with happy endings. I loved the idea so much, that I've 'borrowed' it for this February newsletter. The first question that came up was, 'how do you definite happy ending?' All the staff members have determined the definition for themselves and the discussions that have ensued have been extremely interesting. Most everyone agrees that 'happy ending' doesn't equate romance. In Like No Other, for example, I think the ending is happy precisely because (spoiler alert) the two characters do not stay together. They influence each other in positive ways, to be sure, but it is precisely because they give each other the strength to face the next phase of life as individuals that gives this book such a satisfactory, and happy, ending. Furthermore, if 'resolution' equates happy ending, than most books probably qualify. In fact, a couple of staff members noted that happy endings are relative. The book might be depressing, but if there is a satisfactory resolution then it feels like a happy ending. Our selections of happy endings are below. What would yours be?
