Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a lovely holiday with family and friends, filled with lots of books and time for reading. School is technically back in session, but with the recent storm, the kids (and their teachers! sorry parents) had a nice extra break. We've been working on inventory, which means counting everything in the store. It takes about 2 days and consists of carrying lots of piles of books around, plus a little dusting. We're making plans for the coming year; yes, we're already thinking about summer! We asked all the staff members which book they are most excited about for 2014. See our selections below and remember that you will receive a 20% discount on pre-ordered titles!

Move over E.T.! Tom O’Donnell has given us a new extra-terrestrial, Chorkle, in his hilarious Space Rocks! (pun intended). Not since Spielberg’s classic have I seen such an appealing and compelling portrait of a creature destined to provide a link between species. Middle schoolers will delight in the adventures of this curious and clever little fellow from Asteroid Gelo. Four human children (“hair –heads”) have accompanied an earth-based mining operation on Gelo as a publicity stunt. The earthlings are unaware that the asteroid has underground inhabitants. When the children are accidently marooned on Gelo, Chorkle (with his five eyes) steps in to look after them.

O’Donnell has crafted aliens without sex differentiation – so instead of parents and grandparents, Chorkle has an Originator and a Grand-Originator. It gives Chorkle plenty of opportunities to comment on the male/female dynamics among the 4 humans : Danny, Becky, Nicki, and Little Gus. O’Donnell also explores parent-child issues, difficulties with “foreigners”, and the preservation of resources. Chorkle is also very fond of the human gadgets, which include hologram games and rocket bikes. Challenges abound in the form of a ferocious thyss-cat, a giant usk-lizard and an impending attack by evil rival aliens, the Vorem.
I highly recommend this book for middle school readers.

In Nathan’s world, things are simple. White witches are good; black witches are evil. But Nathan is different. Nathan is half-white. Half-black. Half-good. Half-bad. Nathan is a threat to the Council of White Witches. They must contain the threat. They must keep control. They must, by any means necessary, stay in power. Because, after all, it is the ones in power who get to define what is good and what is evil. A fantasy book that explores social justice and explodes the binary tradition of white and black in the discourse of magic, Half Bad introduces a phenomenal new character, develops an innovative narrative, and demonstrates that black and white aren’t always black and white.
