November 2015: Picture Book Month

November 2015
 Picture Book Month*

I would like to convince you that picture books have value, but I also know that when talking about picture books, it's amazing how quickly the conversation can turn clinical.

It takes 1000 hours of "lap-time" for young children to have the readiness skills in place to learn to read.
~ National Institute for Children's Health and Development

"Lap time" is the one-on-one interaction between caregiver and child and includes talking, singing, reading. 1,000 hours before 5 years works out to about 1/2 hour a day, if you start immediately.

"The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children. This is especially so during the preschool years." Anderson, Richard C., et al. Becoming a Nation of Readers: The Report of the Commission on Reading (1984).

Oh no!

If you're reading this newsletter, if you shop in our store, you probably don't need statistics or quotations to be convinced. Indeed, you might have already come in to Eight Cousins and explained to me, or any other staff member, why you love books. You might have told us about your favorite memories of reading picture books to your kids, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, god children, friends' kids, students. You have shared your favorites books, sometimes the classics like Goodnight Moon, sometimes a more obscure book that is no longer in print. You have expressed heartache when you find out a book is out of print, "how can that be?!?! I LOVED that book!!"

You are already ambassadors for picture books. You know that reading picture books together is basically the same as snuggling. You don't really need to talk about it or analyze it, because you know how reading picture books together feels. You know it's fun. You know picture books can make you laugh and break your heart. They can say things without saying anything. They can teach you something new and make you feel safe all at the same time.

You already love picture books. We do, too. Here are some of our favorites.

Last Stop on Market Street Challenge!

You may remember the #GreatGreeneChallenge from last year. If not, read about it here.

We are excited to announce that Round 2 has officially begun. Bookstores across New England and down the East Coast have committed to promoting Last Stop on Market Street, an amazing picture book by Matt de la Peña, illustrated by Christian Robinson.

We chose Last Stop on Market Street because it encompasses everything we love about picture books: a great cast of characters, a compelling story, fantastic illustrations, and an endearing message about looking for the beautiful.

We are proud to feature this book and the creative efforts of Matt de la Peña and Christian Robinson, both avid champions of children's literature.

What can you do? Purchase a copy for yourself -- you won't regret it! Or consider donating a copy to your child's classroom, the local library, or any other children's service organization.

What happens if we win this challenge? Eight Cousins will be able to sponsor a school visit with Matt de la Peña!

Local teachers, please contact Sara at events@eightcousins.com, if you are interested in having Matt visit your school!

Tasha and Lola's Book Corner

Lola is 2 ½, and our latest adventure is learning colors. She has been able to say the words for some time, and every once in a while has been able to identify colors correctly, but it is only within the past few weeks that she has consistently been able to connect the correct word with the correct color.

One of our favorite books for practicing colors has been The Day the Crayons Quit, written by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. In this hilarious story, Duncan arrives at school to discover a stack of complaint letters from his crayons. Lola is particularly intrigued by the white crayon, and has a soft spot for the well-loved blue crayon. This has been a great book to pair with crayons and paper in the morning, as it can inspire Lola to color while allowing me to slip away and prepare for my own day.

Another favorite book for practicing colors has been Baby Bear Sees Blue, written and illustrated by Ashley Wolff. In this sweet picture book, Baby Bear emerges from his den to explore a world of colors, from red strawberries, to orange butterflies, to brown trout. This book comes in both a hardcover and a board book format, and has been a favorite to read at bedtime. Since I like pairing books with a prop, this is a great book to use along with the adorable Folkmanis Black Bear Cub puppet.

Picture books about Friendship

Recently an educator brought us this list of 25 Books about Friendship. The article offers books about friendship as a positive antidote to the 'anti-bullying' focus. The list contains a lot of great suggestions, many of which are classics, but I wished it had featured some of the amazing new books on friendship that  are not as well known. Yet!

My Two Blankets is an immigration and a friendship story. The reader eventually realizes that the two blankets represent language and Cartwheel starts to create her second blanket when she makes a friend. I absolutely love this book!
Tale of Two Beasts is the same story told from two different perspectives. I think it explains nicely the concept that you can think you're doing something nice, but the other person might see your kind gesture for example in a completely different way. The two do find common ground in both versions.

Strictly No Elephants is new this week and completely adorable. Elephants are not welcome at the Pet Club. But neither are skunks, porcupines, giraffes, penguins, armadillos, bats, and narwhales, so these pets, and their owners, decide to start a new club where everyone is welcome, because "that's what friends do."

Friends come in all shapes and they do lots of things, make you happy, stick together, welcome others, and bring a little love.
True friends 'stick' up for each other.
What happens when you need a hug, but you're just a little too prickly? Find someone solid. They might need a hug as much as you!

Dewey Bob is a collector, but soon learns that collecting friends isn't as easy as collecting buttons. You know what they say, if you love someone set them free, if they come back .  . . you know the rest.
Friends fight. Then they make up. Matthew and Tilly reminds readers that playing together is way more fun than being alone.
