Battle Dragons #1 is precisely the fast-paced, incredibly thoughtful story one would expect from Alex London. In Abel’s world, the only thing more dangerous than the dragons are the warring factions of kin that terrorize each other’s communities, exploit their own, and stage deadly dragon battles as they fight for dominance over the city. Abel is caught between family, friends, and his own desire to prove that he’s worth more than everyone thinks. When he bonds with a dragon and reluctantly starts training for battle, he has to decide what is truly worth fighting for even if it means betraying people he thought he would risk everything to protect.

Ant — short for Anthony — loves the card game Spades. He’d like to think he’s pretty good, but then he meets Shirley. Shirley is quick, strategic, and dominates the table. Ant has to decide whether to resort to trash-talking and dismissing Shirley or actually valuing her expertise and learning something from her. The decision is harder than it sounds, given that most of what he sees modeled from the other men in his life is trash-talk and sexism. A story about growing up, physically and emotionally, and learning to respect yourself and others, Playing the Cards You’re Dealt is a fantastic new book from Varian Johnson.

The Shape of Thunder is a testament to the craft of writing. It is, hands down, one of the best books I have ever read. It is magical and devastating. It contains the whole of human emotion. Warga does an amazing job at touching on a variety of topics and opening space for incredibly complex stories in just one or two sentences. Her two main characters are vivid; not only did I feel everything they felt, I genuinely cared deeply about them within the first two chapters. I love this book and it will go down in history as one of my all-time favorites. Jasmine Warga's writing is breathtaking; middle grade readers, teen readers, adults, do not miss the opportunity to experience this book for yourselves.

Sven, a restless soul, is living in Stockholm, with his sister Olga and her family. After listening for years to Sven’s wish for adventure through polar exploration, Olga sees a notice for a coal mining job in Spitsbergen (Northern Norway). The employment contracts are lucrative, and she perceives this as an opportunity for Sven to escape Stockholm, make money, and satisfy his dreams of exploring the polar region.

Miller’s story is inspired by a real place, which is the subject of local lore. The region oscillates between months of no sun and months of no night, making it one of the most punishing and unforgiving landscapes on earth: an appropriate setting for The Memoirs of Stockholm Sven, which features a delightful cast of characters who, by necessity, develop a network of support and kindness.

In the years leading up to the infamous Salem witch trials, women who exhibited unseemly behavior (eating with a three-pronged fork or accusing their husband of cruelty) could be tried as witches. In this work of fiction Chris Bohjalian introduces Mary Greenwood, who, in 1692, both accuses her husband of cruelty and uses a three-pronged fork, opening her up to investigations of further “signs” of possession. Bohjalian is known for twists, turns, and interesting characters. In Hour of the Witch, he does not disappoint. A great thriller and historical mystery.

Although Billie Jean Moffet King is best known for her success on the tennis court, limiting her legacy to athletics would be a huge mistake. King’s life, from an early age, revolved around not just excelling at tennis, but having a keen eye on inequalities. From the time she was told to step out of a photo because she was not in a white tennis skirt, to her most recent Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative, she has spent a lifetime asking “why are things not equal?”

King fought for women to have the same resources as men and for all aspiring players to have access to the same facilities and opportunities as those in wealthier communities. For many of us, her Battle of the Sexes match against Bobby Riggs in 1973 is a defining memory. King relives the lead-up to the match, the match, and the post-match story. She reminds us of how high the stakes were for her and women to be successful in that match. Spoiler alert — she and Riggs became friends. He admitted that he underestimated King. King’s analysis of her match strategy and how she changed it at the last minute is fascinating.

King lays out her choices in life, the challenges she took on, the mistakes she made and her personal struggles, in what reads as an unflinching review of her life. Calling her an American hero is not an exaggeration. We have all gained from her leadership, determination, and work for social justice.
